Tyramine is a sympathetic mimetic with indirect action, because it induces an increase in the concentration of adrenaline in the synaptic space. It is not used for pharmacological purposes, but is a component of many foods, such as: beer, legumes and cheeses; therefore individuals on antidepressant drug therapy with MAO-inhibitors (which enhance the noradrenergic signal) must be careful not to take foods containing high doses of tyramine, otherwise hypertension could arise.
