Multifollicular Ovary (MFO): What is it? Symptoms, Causes and Pregnancy

Also called multicystic ovary, this disorder is mainly asymptomatic, that is, it does not involve other signs and symptoms, and can be identified through a routine gynecological examination. The multifollicular ovary can resolve spontaneously or, when necessary, with a hormone therapy protocol established by the doctor.

Inside the ovaries, the follicles look like many small cysts on transvaginal ultrasound. In reality, these "envelopes" contain the maturing oocytes which form part of the woman's reproductive "reserve". In the multifollicular ovary, the follicles are distributed throughout the ovary, not just in the cortical (peripheral) area.
