What is Anemia
Anemia is defined as a reduction in the ability of the blood to carry oxygen.
This condition is generally associated with a low hematocrit (Htc), which can be caused either by a decrease in the number of erythrocytes (or red blood cells), by an "alteration in their size or, in the presence of a normal hematocrit value, by a low concentration of hemoglobin (or Hb). Most of the oxygen transported in the blood is bound to the hemoglobin in the erythrocytes and a decrease in their quantity or size is associated with low hemoglobin levels (remember that the "Hb is contained in red blood cells and is responsible for transporting oxygen to all the cells of the body).
