Generality
Retinal detachment is a very serious condition, which occurs when the innermost membrane of the eye detaches from its supporting tissues. Retinal detachment can manifest itself with the vision of light beams (photopsies) and / or motile corpuscles (floaters), associated with blurring and sudden and dramatic loss of vision. Since the condition leads to functional loss of the retinal cells involved, permanent partial or total blindness in the affected eye could occur without immediate treatment.
