E503 AMMONIUM CARBONATE
E503 (I): AMMONIUM CARBONATE
E503 (II): AMMONIUM BICARBONATE
Ammonium carbonate and ammonium bicarbonate are compounds obtained from ammonium sulphate and calcium carbonate; they are used as acidity regulators, support for additives, anti-caking agents and as raising agents.
Ammonium carbonate and ammonium bicarbonate can be contained in various products, such as in some sweets.
It comes in the form of white powder or hard, white or translucent masses or crystals. It becomes opaque upon exposure to air, eventually turning into white porous lumps or dust (of ammonium bicarbonate) due to the loss of ammonia and carbon dioxide. Soluble in water.
There are currently no known negative side effects on human health, except for gas formation in the stomach after ingestion.
