Pilates is the name of a method of gymnastics (fitness) developed in the early 20th century by a sports and health enthusiast, Joseph Pilates.
ShutterstockThe pilates method is practiced on a special mat, with or without accessories and tools, or using devices specifically designed for the system. Its purpose is to improve muscle flexibility, coordinate breathing, relax excessive tension, increase joint mobility, strength, posture and balance. All this happens above all through gymnastics - in a certain sense, of a corrective type - and to the simultaneous development of the core - the set of deep muscles between the sternum and pelvis.
