The onset of this lesion can occur mainly in two ways:
- Traumatic or accidental rupture of a gland within a tissue or organ with sequestration of mucous material (mucocele from mucosal retention);
- Obstruction of physiological ducts or cavities with mucus leaking into the surrounding connective tissue, resulting in an inflammatory reaction (extravasation mucocele).
The mucocele can resolve on its own, as the cystic formation tends to reabsorb spontaneously or undergoes rupture. If necessary, surgical therapy is indicated, aimed at removing the lesion or emptying the cavity.
or a soft, floating lump.
Mucocele can potentially develop in any epithelium: sinuses, intestines, urogenital tract and so on.
