Headaches are divided into primary and secondary, depending on whether they are a problem in themselves or the consequence of a pathology, such as head or neck trauma, cerebral circulatory disorders, infections, inflammation, epilepsy, intoxication or abuse of certain substances (alcohol, drugs , analgesics), diseases of the skull, neck, ears, nose, teeth, mouth and others, psychiatric disorders, internal diseases (e.g. hypertension, anemia).
Headaches are one of the most common reasons for medical consultation.
.The purpose of these classification systems is to provide healthcare professionals with a tool to facilitate the recognition of the different types of headache, then formulate a specific diagnosis and, consequently, adopt the most effective therapeutic strategy.
To simplify, the forms of headache are basically divided into three categories:
- Primary headaches;
- Secondary headaches;
- Cranial neuralgia and central or primary facial pain and other headaches.
