Generality

Syndesmosis is a particular type of fibrous joint (or synarthrosis).
The peculiarity of this type of joint lies in the fact that it joins two bones by means of an aponeurotic membrane or by means of a series of ligaments.

The aponeurotic membrane and the ligaments that form syndesmosis are called, respectively, interosseous membrane and interosseous ligaments.
In the human body, the most important examples of syndesmosis are: tibio-fibular syndesmosis, located between the tibia and fibula, radio-ulnar syndesmosis, located between the radius and ulna, and vertebral syndesmosis, located in the spinal column.
Syndesmosis are fibrous joints that can be injured. Typically, these are injuries of a traumatic nature.
