Peppermint: Mentha for peppermint, Labiate family. Herbaceous perennial plant; it is a hybrid. The drug is supplied by the leaves, dried or distilled in a stream of water vapor, from which an essential oil particularly rich in menthol (characterizing monoterpene) is extracted, with small quantities of sesquiterpenes. The properties ascribed to this drug mainly concern the field herbal, being mint: disinfectant; refreshing (because it acts at the level of the heat and cold receptors by hyperactivating them); mildly anesthetic; mildly irritating to the mucous membranes (so much so that it is widely used for therapies concerning myalgia, neuralgic disorders and inflammation of the upper airways, such as spasmolytic, expectorant, decongestant and bronchodilator).
