Lemon: Citrus limon. From the pulp of the hesperides a juice rich in vitamin C and citric acid (7-10%) is obtained by pressing, while an essence with eupeptic properties, mildly spasmolytic and sedative, is extracted from the peel, widely used in the liquor industry; the terpenic component is represented by limonene, citral - from which the characteristic odor derives - and citronellal; there are still numerous flavonoids (including glycosides), tannins, coumarins and citric acid. An essential oil used in the cosmetic field is extracted from the flowers; the dried leaves are used to prepare decoctions capable of stimulating the appetite.
