TESTOVIS ® is a testosterone propionate drug
THERAPEUTIC GROUP: Androgens
Indications TESTOVIS ® - Testosterone propionate
TESTOVIS ® is used in the treatment of pathologies of both sexes, focusing on genital problems associated with hypogonadism, impotence, hyposexulality and male climacteric in men and on sexual disorders in women suffering from frigidity and menometrorrhagia.
The use of TESTOVIS ® has also been proposed for the treatment of bone fractures with delayed callus formation, osteoporosis, senile involution and in women also for the treatment of mastodinias and mastopathies.
Mechanism of action TESTOVIS ® - Testosterone propionate
The testosterone propionate contained in TESTOVIS ® and dissolved in castor oil gives the hormone a peculiar absorption profile that differs from the classic one, due to the rapid onset of the therapeutic effect and the long duration of action estimated at around 4 weeks. .
Once taken and absorbed, given the sterol nature of the molecule, it is bound to transport proteins such as SHBG and sorted between the various tissues, where, once converted into DHT by the 5 alpha reductase enzyme, it binds nuclear receptors with greater affinity. by modulating the gene expression of the cell in question.
This biological mechanism macroscopically translates into the induction of protein synthesis, the enhancement of the osteodepositic activity and the strengthening of hematopoiesis, useful for supporting the anabolic phase and inhibiting the catabolic one.
At the same time, testosterone guarantees a clear improvement in sexual symptoms, characterized by impotence and alterations in libido, in patients with androgynous deficiency as well as in the course of hypogonadism.
Finally, the ability of this hormone to inhibit normal pituitary gonadotropin secretion at adequate doses has made it possible to experiment with testosterone in male hormonal contraception.
Studies carried out and clinical efficacy
1. THE SIDE EFFECTS OF TESTOSTERONE ON THE PROGENIES
Endocrinology. 2008 Dec; 149: 6444-8.
Prenatal testosterone excess reduces sperm count and motility.
Recabarren SE, Rojas-García PP, Recabarren MP, Alfaro VH, Smith R, Padmanabhan V, Sir-Petermann T.
Experimental study that demonstrates how the assumption of testosterone, even accidental, during pregnancy, can cause a reduction in the number and motility of spermatozoa in male offspring, reducing their reproductive capacities
2. TESTOSTERONE AND NEURONAL DAMAGE
J Neurochem. 2004 Mar; 88: 1179-85.
Testosterone amplifies excitotoxic damage of cultured oligodendrocytes.
Caruso A, Di Giorgi Gerevini V, Castiglione M, Marinelli F, Tomassini V, Pozzilli C, Caricasole A, Bruno V, Caciagli F, Moretti A, Nicoletti F, Melchiorri D.
Very interesting experimental study carried out on cell cultures of oligodendrocytes, which demonstrated how testosterone propionate can amplify the excitotoxic damage on these cells, promoting the apoptotic process. This could study the different incidence between the two sexes of some neurodegenerative diseases.
3. FIGHT AGAINST DOPPING: DETECTION ON HAIR.
J Anal Toxicol. 1999 Sep; 23: 352-6.
Identification of testosterone and testosterone esters in humanhair.
Kintz P, Cirimele V, Jeanneau T, Ludes B.
Further work towards the fight against doping which describes the advent of innovative techniques capable of detecting testosterone esters on hair subjected to gas chromatography and mass spectrometry.
Method of use and dosage
TESTOVIS ®
Tablets for sublingual use of 10 mg of methyltestosterone;
Intramuscular injectable solutions of 50 - 100 mg of testosterone propionate dissolved in sesame oil;
the different formulations foreseen for TESTOVIS ® and the numerous pathologies for which it is indicated do not allow to define standard and slavishly reproducible dosages from patient to patient.
For this reason, the therapeutic scheme must be set by your doctor, after a "careful evaluation of the patient's state of health, his clinical condition and his therapeutic goal.
Substantial differences in the doses and in the frequencies of assumption are inevitably correlated to the different pharmaceutical nature of the product and consequently to the half-life of the same product.
Warnings TESTOVIS ® - Testosterone propionate
Before starting to take TESTOVIS ® it would be necessary to consult the specialist doctor, undergoing a careful medical examination useful to avoid the possible presence of conditions incompatible with the therapy.
In fact, the presence of hypertension, epilepsy, cardiovascular, hepatic, renal and metabolic pathologies could represent a serious limitation to the use of testosterone for therapeutic purposes given the increased risk of onset of side effects.
In the aforementioned patients, therefore, it would be necessary to define a schedule of periodic checks necessary to monitor the psycho-physical health of the patient, providing for the immediate suspension of therapy when the first side effects appear.
The use in prepubertal age should instead take place with particular attention, given the possible deleterious effects on bone growth and on the too rapid development of the male genital organs.
The tablets contain lactose for which the assumption in patients with lactase enzymatic deficiency, glucose / galactose malabsorption, lactose intolerance could be associated with the onset of side effects concentrated especially on the gastrointestinal level.
PREGNANCY AND BREASTFEEDING
Different studies have shown how testosterone can easily permeate the blood-placental barrier, reaching the fetal circulation and causing an increased risk of virilization of the fetus.
For this reason, the intake of TESTOVIS ® is contraindicated both during pregnancy and in the subsequent lactation period.
Interactions
In light of the various pharmacokinetic studies carried out, the clinically relevant interactions associated with the contextual intake of testosterone and other active ingredients are attributable to:
- Increased risk of bleeding, observed following concomitant administration of oral anticoagulants;
- Hypoglycemia, in patients undergoing hypoglycemic therapy;
- Edema and hypertension, more frequently described in patients receiving cortisone therapy.
On the other hand, the possible pharmacokinetic interactions linked to the concomitant intake of hepatic enzyme inducers or inhibitors remain to be characterized more carefully.
It is useful to remember how testosterone intake could offset some laboratory parameters indicative of thyroid, renal, adrenal and hepatic function.
Contraindications TESTOVIS ® - Testosterone propionate
The assumption of testosterone is contraindicated in case of hypersensitivity to the active substance or to one of its excipients, breast cancer, estrogen-dependent neoplasms, prostatic cancer and hypertrophy, history of hepatocarcinoma, hypercalcemia, nephrotic syndrome, pregnancy and lactation.
Undesirable Effects - Side Effects
The intake of androgens at high doses or outside medical indications is more frequently associated with the appearance of unpleasant side effects related to the androgynous effect of some metabolites such as dehydrotestosterone.
More precisely, the increased risk of prostatic hypertrophy and prostate cancer, weight gain and water retention, hypertension and cardiovascular complications, hypercholesterolemia, acne, hirsutism, impaired liver function, oligozoospermia and non-specific myalgias represent the most frequent adverse reaction.
The assumption of testosterone in women can more easily cause virilization with alterations in the tone of the voice, hirsutism, clitoral hypertrophy and a significant increase in sexual libido.
Note
TESTOVIS ® can only be sold under medical prescription.
TESTOVIS ® is an anabolic agent, therefore its use, outside of medical prescriptions on a pathological basis, is prohibited in and out of competition.
