NUROFEN ® is an Ibuprofen-based drug
THERAPEUTIC GROUP: Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory and antirheumatic drugs
Indications NUROFEN ® Ibuprofen
NUROFEN ® is indicated in the treatment of inflammatory and painful conditions related to rheumatic, osteo-articular, traumatic and other pathologies.
Given its antipyretic action, NUROFEN ® can be used as an adjuvant in the symptomatic treatment of fever and flu.
Mechanism of action NUROFEN ® Ibuprofen
Ibuprofen, an active ingredient of synthetic origin belonging to the category of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, owes its great therapeutic success to the higher efficacy / safety ratio than that of other drugs belonging to the same category.
Ibuprofen, taken orally, is rapidly absorbed by the gastrointestinal mucosa, especially when on an empty stomach, promptly reaching maximum plasma concentrations and distributing itself, bound to plasma proteins, to the tissues involved in the inflammatory process.
Here it is able to inhibit cyclooxygenases, reducing the synthesis of inflammatory prostaglandins, and instead favoring the production of lipoxins, molecules with inhibitory activity against leukocyte recall and adhesion.
The anti-inflammatory action is also flanked by the analgesic and antipyretic action, which allows to significantly broaden the therapeutic indications provided for NUROFEN ®, thus guaranteeing an effective therapeutic action for various pathological states.
Studies carried out and clinical efficacy
1. DERIVATIVES OF IBUPROPHEN AND CANCER
Breast Cancer Res. 2012 Jan 31; 14: R20. [Epub ahead of print]
Phospho-ibuprofen (MDC-917) suppresses breast cancer growth: an effect controlled by the thioredoxin system.
Sun Y, Rowehl LM, Huang L, Machenzie GG, Vrankova K, Komninou D, Rigas B.
Important study that demonstrates the ability of some active ingredients derived from ibuprofen to counteract tumor proliferation, in particular of breast cancer cells, by modulating their gene expression and reducing the proliferative rate.
2. IBUPROPHENE AND MEDICAL ABORTION
Fertil Steril. 2012 Mar; 97: 612-5. Epub 2012 Jan 20.
Pre-emptive effect of ibuprofen versus placebo on pain relief and success rates of medical abortion: a double-blind, randomized, controlled study.
Avraham S, Gat I, Duvdevani NR, Haas J, Frenkel Y, Seidman DS.
Study that demonstrates how the preventive administration of ibuprofen can reduce pain in women undergoing medical abortion, without interfering in the abortive action of the active ingredients used.
3. IBUPROPHEN AND POSTOPERATIVE PAIN
J Endod. 2011 Dec; 37: 1608-12. Epub 2011 Oct 1.
Efficacy of Ibuprofen and ibuprofen / acetaminophen on postoperative pain in symptomatic patients with a pulpal diagnosis of necrosis.
Wells LK, Drum M, Nusstein J, Reader A, Beck M.
Clinical trial that demonstrates how the intake of ibuprofen can be as effective as that of ibuprofen / paracetamol in reducing postoperative pain in endodontic practices necessary for the treatment of dental pulp necrosis.
Method of use and dosage
NUROFEN ®
Coated tablets of 200 - 400 mg of ibuprofen;
Ibuprofen 20 mg granules for oral solution.
The dosage of ibuprofen, which can be used in adults, can vary considerably depending on the physio-pathological characteristics of the patient and the severity of his clinical picture.
In any case, it is advisable to start therapy with the lowest effective dose, capable of guaranteeing a therapeutic effect, possibly adjusting the dose at a later time, up to the maximum of 1200-1800 mg per day.
Precautions in the formulation of the dosage must necessarily be provided for elderly patients or patients suffering from renal diseases.
Warnings NUROFEN ® Ibuprofen
Although NUROFEN ® is a non-prescription drug, the patient should consult their physician before taking this medicine.
In particular, patients suffering from renal, hepatic, gastrointestinal and cardiovascular diseases should require constant medical supervision and periodic monitoring of the blood concentrations of some parameters indicative of their state of health.
An adjustment of the dosage normally used is necessary for elderly patients or patients with renal insufficiency, given the risk of a potential accumulation of ibuprofen.
PREGNANCY AND BREASTFEEDING
We strongly advise against taking NUROFEN ® during pregnancy, given the importance of prostaglandins in guaranteeing correct fetal development. In fact, it is known that excessive inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis can cause the onset of fetal malformations and increase the number of abortions.
Side effects could also affect the parturient, given the increased risk of bleeding and the reduction in the frequency and intensity of uterine contractions.
This contraindication also extends to the subsequent phase of breastfeeding, despite the fact that ibuprofen is among the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, the one capable of concentrating less in breast milk.
Interactions
Although the potential drug interactions expected for ibuprofen are multiple, only a few are clinically relevant.
Particular attention, both for the appearance of possible side effects, and for the impairment of normal therapeutic efficacy should be reserved for the simultaneous administration of ACE inhibitors and angiotensin II antagonists, analgesics, antibiotics, methotrexate, oral anticoagulants, antidepressants, inhibitors of serotonin reuptake. , corticosteroids and other NSAIDs.
Contraindications NUROFEN ® Ibuprofen
The intake of NUROFEN ® is contraindicated in patients hypersensitive to the active substance or to one of its excipients, hypersensitive to acetylsalicylic acid and other analgesics, suffering from asthma, nasal polyposis, hepatic, renal and cardiac insufficiency, intestinal bleeding, ulcerative colitis or previous history for the same pathologies.
Undesirable Effects - Side Effects
Careful post-marketing monitoring and a thriving scientific literature support the relative safety of "ibuprofen when administered according to appropriate medical indications.
Although the side effects can affect various districts, from the nervous one with headache, depression and insomnia to the skin with rash, hives and dermatitis, adverse reactions are observed more frequently in the gastrointestinal area, with nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, colitis, diarrhea. , constipation and in the most severe cases gastritis and peptic ulcers.
It is also useful to recall the results of some epidemiological studies which correlate the prolonged use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs to cardio-vascular, renal and hepatic diseases.
Note
NUROFEN ® can be sold without a prescription.
