LENTO-KALIUM ® is a potassium chloride based drug
THERAPEUTIC GROUP: Minerals - Potassium
Indications LENTO-KALIUM ® - Potassium
LENTO-KALIUM ® is used in the prevention and treatment of potassium deficiencies associated with prolonged use of diuretics, the abuse of laxatives and the presence of prolonged diarrhea or vomiting.
LENTO-KALIUM ® can also be used in cases of digitalis poisoning or in the treatment of hypokalaemic and hypochloraemic metabolic alkalosis.
Mechanism of action SLOW-KALIUM ® - Potassium
Potassium is a precious electrolyte for controlling the activity of cells, tissues, organs and systems.
Its importance in the cellular economy is due to the role of:
- Enzymatic cofactor, necessary for the correct functioning of numerous enzymes involved above all in glucose metabolism;
- Main intracellular ion, necessary to maintain the correct membrane potential, and consequently the related phenomena of excitation and conduction of nerve impulses.
LENTO-KALIUM ® supplies this element in the form of potassium chloride, a salt capable not only of providing potassium but also of replenishing chlorine, thus contributing to the maintenance of a better electrolyte balance, useful for safeguarding the health of the cell.
Moreover, this medicine, thanks to the presence of a particular chemical formulation, allows to release the aforementioned salt slowly and homogeneously, thus avoiding the formation of deposits and the related irritating effects on the gastric mucosa.
Studies carried out and clinical efficacy
1. POTASSIUM AND DIABETES
Diabetology. 2012 Feb 10.
Potassium intake and risk of incident type 2 diabetes mellitus: the Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults (CARDIA) Study.
Chatterjee R, Colangelo LA, Yeh HC, Anderson CA, Daviglus ML, Liu K, Brancati FL.
Low potassium intake is associated with an increased risk of developing type II diabetes, especially in African-American patients. In these cases, therefore, potassium supplementation could have an important preventive role.
2. POTASSIUM AND RENAL FUNCTIONALITY
Scand J Clin Lab Invest. 2012 Feb; 72: 78-86.
Effect of potassium supplementation on renal tubular function, ambulatory blood pressure and pulse wave velocity in healthy humans.
Matthesen SK, Larsen T, Vase H, Lauridsen TG, Pedersen EB.
Work that demonstrates how potassium supplementation can affect renal function, improving water absorption and increasing tubular function in the distal part of the nephron, without this causing an increase in blood pressure
3. POTASSIUM IN KALA-AZAR THERAPY
Am J Trop Med Hyg. 2010 Nov; 83: 1040-3.
Improving outcome of treatment of kala-azar by supplementation of amphotericin B with physiologic saline and potassium chloride.
Thakur CP, Kumar A, Mitra DK, Roy A, Sinha AK, Ranjan A.
The adjuvant action of potassium in the pharmacological therapy of Kala-azar (visceral leishmaniasis), has been shown to be effective in reducing the side effects in the kidney, monitored with blood concentrations of creatinine, induced by amphotericin B.
Method of use and dosage
SLOW-KALIUM ®
Hard capsules for oral use containing 600 mg of potassium chloride.
It is generally recommended to take 1 - 2 capsules two - three times a day.
In reality, the dosage used should be established by the doctor after evaluating the patient's needs, the clinical picture and the quantity of this element taken through the diet.
It is recommended to take LENTO-KALIUM ® on a full stomach, in order to reduce the irritation of the gastric mucosa.
Warning LENTO-KALIUM ® - Potassium
The intake of LENTO-KALIUM ® should be preceded by a careful medical examination useful to assess the patient's overall health, the possible presence of hyperkalaemia and reduced renal function.
In the above cases, the administration of this medicine could be contraindicated or, if necessary, strictly subject to the constant supervision of your doctor.
Some of the expected side effects for potassium salts could aggravate pre-existing complications in the gastric mucosa.
Treatment should always be associated with plasma electrolyte monitoring.
PREGNANCY AND BREASTFEEDING
The intake of LENTO-KALIUM ® during pregnancy and in the subsequent period of breastfeeding, should be carried out only in case of real need and under strict medical supervision.
Interactions
LENTO-KALIUM ® can be used during pregnancy and in the subsequent lactation period, only under strict medical supervision.
Contraindications LENTO-KALIUM ® - Potassium
The use of LENTO-KALIUM ® is contraindicated in case of hypersensitivity to the active ingredients or to their excipients, hyperkalaemia, renal and adrenal insufficiency, uremia, dehydration, diabetic acidosis, reduced gastrointestinal motility and hereditary periodic adynamia.
Undesirable Effects - Side Effects
Although the particular pharmaceutical formulation provided for LENTO-KALIUM ® allows to significantly reduce the side effects associated with the intake of potassium chloride, it is useful to remember how this salt could cause the appearance of nausea, diarrhea, gastrointestinal pain and in the most serious cases damage. gastric mucosa with gastrointestinal obstruction or perforation.
On the other hand, overdose may be responsible for hyperkalaemia with both renal and cardiac complications.
Note
LENTO-KALIUM ® is a drug that can only be sold with a prescription.
