The term stomatitis indicates the presence of a generic inflammatory process affecting the oral mucosa; this inflammation can therefore affect the labial and buccal mucosa, the palate, the tongue, the gums and the entire perimeter of the mouth.
The possible causes at the origin of a stomatitis are quite varied: infections (such as thrush), trauma, ionizing radiation, toxic agents, local trauma, dryness of the mucosa, autoimmune diseases, often favored by stress, and severe food deficiencies (vitamin C, scurvy, vitamin PP, pellagra, iron, pernicious anemia).
The therapeutic approach of stomatitis cannot therefore ignore the correct identification of the causes that generated it. In this context, herbal medicine is proposed as a valid support to traditional therapy, but it too must obviously take into consideration the causes at the origin of the stomatitis.
Medicinal plants and supplements useful against stomatitis
Infectious stomatitis: propolis, essential oil drugs (sage, mint, menthol, cloves, chamomile, anise) for their disinfectant properties; drugs rich in tannins (witch hazel, rhatany, tormentilla, oak bark) for their astringent and anti-edematous properties.
Supportive phytotherapy in the presence of stomatitis of various origins: mucilaginous drugs (marshmallow, mallow, aloe gel), which layering on the mucous membranes of the oral cavity as a sort of gel protect the mouth from further insults and soothe inflammation.
Myrrh, one of the most used herbal remedies in the presence of stomatitis, owes its action to the set of three classes of important active ingredients: essential oil, with antibacterial properties, gums, which protect the mucous membranes, and derivatives terpenic, with anti-inflammatory and astringent properties. Calendula is also useful for its anti-inflammatory and healing properties, particularly useful when stomatitis is accompanied by ulcers (mouth ulcers).
