Also known by the abbreviation "Night Apnea", this problem is characterized by repeated episodes of partial or complete obstruction of the upper airways that occur in sleep, during the inspiratory phase. The temporary closure of the space of the upper airways blocks the passage of the air through the throat. The obstruction manifests itself as a reduction (hypopnea) or complete respiratory interruption (apnea for a period> 10 seconds) of the flow of air, with persistence of thoraco-diaphragmatic movements.
Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome involves a reduction in the concentration of oxygen in the blood, as well as a reduced quantity or quality of sleep.
