Editorial board Tolcapone - Chemical Structure
It is able to inhibit the action of catechol-O-methyltransferases (COMT), enzymes responsible for the metabolism of catecholamines such as dopamine, whose depletion we recall is considered responsible for the onset of symptoms of Parkinson's disease. Furthermore, COMTs are also able to degrade levodopa, a precursor of dopamine and a drug used in the treatment of the disease in question. Not surprisingly, tolcapone is always administered in association with levodopa.
In Italy, the only tolcapone-based drug present bears the trade name of Tasmar®. In order to be dispensed, it requires the presentation of a specific repeatable medical prescription; however, since it is classified as a Class A drug, its cost may be reimbursed by the National Health System (SSN).
, in order to try to reduce, or in any case control, the symptoms.
Tolcapone is always associated with levodopa in order to inhibit COMT which would otherwise degrade it rapidly.
