E553a MAGNESIUM SILICATE OR MAGNESIUM TRISILICATE
Magnesium silicate or magnesium trisilicate is a compound that has an anti-caking, excipient and support function for aromas and dyes.
It can be contained in various products, such as chewing gum, table salt, bread substitutes, cheeses, supplements, and in some sweets because it acts as a release agent.
At the moment there are conflicting theses on the effects that this additive can have on human health: some researchers think that there may be a contamination of the product with asbestos and this could represent a risk for the lungs (following any inhalation of talc with asbestos); other researchers, on the other hand, consider it harmless to human health as it is not absorbed by the body.
At the moment, given the different hypotheses on the effects of this additive, more in-depth research is being carried out.
