The prohibition of use as food additives laid down by Regulation (EU) 380/2012 for some CLAYS (including bentonite) was dictated by the "need to limit the exposure of the population to the dietary intake of aluminum, a structural constituent of clays, on based on the opinion of the EFSA which, evaluating the possible risks for human health deriving from its presence in food, has fixed the tolerable weekly dose at 1 mg / kg of body weight.
