E530 MAGNESIUM HYDROXIDE
Magnesium oxide (MgO) is a product derived from the overheating of magnesium carbonate.
- Very coarse white powder known as light magnesium oxide, or relatively thick white powder known as heavy magnesium oxide. 5 g of light magnesium oxide occupies a volume of 40-50 ml, while 5 g of heavy magnesium oxide occupies a volume of 10-20 ml
Its main function is that of acidity regulator, as well as being useful for the anti-caking effect.
It can be used in various products, such as some ice creams and powder preparations (avoids the formation of lumps).
It can also be used in medicine to combat stomach acid (eg Maalox, Magnesia).
There are currently no known negative side effects to human health, although research is contradictory. In high concentrations, magnesium can have a laxative effect.
