E433 POLYSORBATE 80 or SORBITAN POLYOXYETHYLENE MONOOLEATE
Polysorbate 80 is a natural compound produced starting from ethylene oxide, sorbitol and oleic acid.
It mainly has an emulsifying function and can be contained in various products, such as baked goods, but also desserts, industrial ice creams, candies, chewing gums, sauces and freeze-dried soups etc.
At the doses normally used, there are no negative side effects, but it is believed that in predisposed subjects polysorbate 80 can cause skin reactions, digestive disorders, bladder and kidney stones, weight gain, urinary infections, poor assimilation of iron at high doses . It is also thought that it may contain residues that are harmful to health, such as iron oxide, dioxane and ethylene glycol.
Importantly, people intolerant to propylene glycol should avoid the additive group E430 to E436.
