E321 HYDROXYTOLUENE BUTYLATE (BHT)
Butylated hydroxytoluene is a synthetic antioxidant similar to the previous one, but cheaper.
It can cause skin reactions, cracking on the skin and physical disturbances to the reproductive and circulatory system.
Also this additive, like E320, can favor the formation of gastric enzymes in the liver, thus feeding the destruction of other substances such as vitamin D.
It is forbidden to put it in baby food.
Butylated hydroxytoluene can be contained in chewing gums, foods containing fat, etc.
There are still conflicting opinions on its toxicity: some experiments, in fact, have raised the possibility that it can cause tumors in the rat.
ADI DOSE: 0.05 mg per kg of body weight.
After the evaluation of the quantities of BHA and BHT taken at national level, this additive is one of the additives for which the safety levels must be reviewed and re-evaluated.
