E128 - RED 2G (C.C.I 18050)
2G red is a synthetic red dye currently banned in Europe (from 28/7/2007).
With Regulation 884 of July 26, 2007, the European Commission suspended the use of the colorant E 128. The measure entered into force immediately, ie on July 27.
Until a few days ago, the use of this dye was allowed in meat preparations for hamburgers; more technically in breakfast sausages with cereals and in meat for burgers with cereals. In both cases a limit of use was set (20 mg / kg).
The EFSA (European food safety authority), however, examining the color E 128 red 2 G a few years ago found that this substance is metabolized into aniline, a carcinogenic compound for which a genotoxic mechanism cannot be excluded. of these considerations, EFSA concluded that it would be prudent to consider the dye in question as a safety concern.
It is also said, however, that if it were possible to further clarify the carcinogenic effect of aniline and it was demonstrated that this effect occurs only starting from a certain quantity and / or that it does not concern man, the "use of" E 128 red 2 G as a food additive could be subject to a new reassessment.
ADI DOSE: 0.1 mg per kg of body weight.
