E127 - ERYTHROSIN (C.I. 45430)
Erythrosine is the red synthetic dye of coal tar, containing iodine, therefore capable of causing thyroid disorders. In some countries, its use is prohibited because thyroid tumors have been found to develop in experimental animals when given in high doses. Human consumption can also cause risks; it can in fact induce hyperthyroidism and sensitization to light, as well as asthma, urticaria, insomnia and allergies.
Currently, the use of erythrosine is still permitted as an additive within the European Union. It is commonly found in candy, canned fruit, popsicles, candied cherries, ice cream and biscuits.
ADI DOSE: 0.1 mg per kg of body weight.
