The serum is what remains of the blood after having removed the figurative elements and the clotting factors. The composition of the serum, therefore, is substantially similar to plasma (blood without the corpuscular component), but it lacks fibrinogen and other substances that intervene in the coagulation process. Simplifying the definition even more, the serum represents that liquid - normally clear - which separates from the blood when it is allowed to clot.
