This condition is frequently encountered in morphological ultrasound of the first trimester. As gestation progresses and the fetus grows, the lower placenta tends to be "dragged" upward, thus freeing the birth canal. For this reason, only a small percentage of expectant mothers (about 10%) with a low placenta in the early stages of pregnancy will have placenta previa.
