This condition is due to a defect in fertilization, in which we witness the degeneration of the chorionic villi into vesicles (cysts). This does not allow a correct maternal-fetal exchange, therefore the pregnancy is destined to stop prematurely.
The exact underlying causes of the vesicular mola are not yet fully known. For diagnosis, ultrasound examination, blood test of human chorionic gonadotropin (beta-hCG) and biopsy are essential to ascertain the benign nature of the condition.
Most women with vesicular mola experience intense nausea and vomiting, vaginal bleeding, excessive enlargement of the uterus and very high blood pressure, particularly in early pregnancy.
Treatment involves emptying the uterine cavity by hysterosuction or curettage. If the vesicular mole persists after surgical removal, chemotherapy may be indicated instead.
