- Aloe-emodin and all preparations in which this substance is present;
- Emodin and all preparations in which this substance is present;
- Preparations based on leaves of Aloe species containing hydroxyanthracene derivatives;
- Dantrone and all preparations in which this substance is present.
In practice, the ban seems to involve many of the popular products containing Aloe. But there are still many open questions: c "it is to be understood, in fact, what practical repercussions the new provisions will have also in Italy. Pending clarification, it is useful to read the document containing the ban in full: it is the Regulation ( EU) 2021/468 of the Commission of 18 March 2021, which amends Annex III of Regulation (EC) no. 1925/2006 of the European Parliament and of the Council as regards botanical species containing derivatives of hydroxyanthracene.
(Efsa) had expressed a "negative opinion on the substances banned today, defining them as genotoxic, that is capable of damaging the DNA and possibly causing cancer, even though he had admitted that there was great uncertainty on the issue and had opened the possibility of evaluate other data.
These are the reasons given by the European Commission: "The European Food Safety Authority found that the hydroxyanthracene derivatives aloe-emodin and emodin and the structurally analogous substance dantrone were shown to be genotoxic in vitro. Aloe extracts were also shown to be genotoxic in vitro, most likely due to the presence of hydroxyanthracene derivatives. Aloe-emodin was also shown to be genotoxic in vivo. "Total aloe extract and" structural analog dantrone were found to be carcinogenic ". Therefore, "Considering that aloe-emodin and emodin may be present in the extracts, the Authority concluded that hydroxyanthracene derivatives should be considered genotoxic and carcinogenic unless there are specific data demonstrating otherwise, and that Extracts containing hydroxyanthracene derivatives raise safety concerns, although uncertainties remain. The Authority was unable to provide guidance on a daily dose of 'hydroxyanthracene derivatives which did not raise human health concerns'.
