Generality
Tietze syndrome is an inflammatory disease of the costal (i.e. ribs) and sternal (i.e. sternum) cartilages, which causes pain, swelling and a sense of numbness at the affected sites.
Despite the various studies carried out on this, the causes of the disease still remain unknown.
Tietze syndrome resembles costochondritis, but it is not the same disease (although, in some ways, the two diseases are very similar).
Therapy consists of: rest and anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs and corticosteroids).
The prognosis, with proper care, is usually positive.
