In the presence of this condition, the skeletal muscles undergo a process of atrophy and lose strength; moreover, very often, there is also a worsening of body composition.
Sarcopenia is a gradual phenomenon, the pace of which progress becomes more and more pressing with the passing of the years.
According to what is reported by the International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF), in people who suffer from it, it could manifest itself with the first slight signs already at the age of 40; according to other sources, even earlier: shortly after the age of 30.
Sarcopenia strongly affects the quality of life of the individual: it is responsible, in fact, for muscle weakness, poor resistance to physical efforts, slowness in the simplest movements (eg: walking), precarious ability to balance (and increased risk of falls), difficulty in carrying out more normal daily activities and the need to physically depend on others.
According to experts, sarcopenia is the result of a combination of factors, including hormonal and metabolic changes, dietary deficiencies, neurodegenerative processes and a sedentary lifestyle.
