The red vine (Vitis vinifera) is, together with bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus), one of the best known and most used drugs when an antioxidant, anti-edema and protective action on the microcirculation is required.
Active principles
Property
The bioflavonoids of the red vine perform an "intense antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity. However, their most important action is carried out at the capillary level, where they positively influence the vascular permeability, preventing this from increasing excessively and bringing with it edema and swelling. The procyanidins are in fact able to stabilize collagen fibers and inhibit the catabolic activity of elastase, an enzyme that leads to the degradation of this key connective tissue protein.
Side effects
There are still no known significant side effects associated with the consumption of red grape leaves. As a precaution, however, its use during pregnancy is not recommended.
Employments
On the market there are standardized proanthocyanidin extracts, indicated for capillary fragility, edema, hemorrhoids, cellulite, water retention and tired, painful and heavy legs.
The red vine is a typical ingredient of many products for topical use (creams, gels, etc.), indicated in the treatment of the same ailments and to be applied on the legs, exercising, with the fingers, rotational movements ranging from the bottom upwards. Its therapeutic activity is such that it is also a common active ingredient of numerous vasoprotective drugs.
