The infection can be caused by various enteroviruses and is transmitted by the fecal-oral route and by direct contact with nasal secretions, fluids, saliva or feces of an infected person, especially after the onset of symptoms.

Hand-foot-mouth disease mainly affects children up to 10 years of age, but the infection can also be transmitted to adolescents and adults, who tend to have milder forms.
There is no specific treatment for hand-foot-mouth disease. Patients must drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration and may require treatment to manage fever and pain caused by ulcers. The risk of infection can be reduced by adopting good hygiene practices, such as washing hands often and thoroughly.
