The position of the heart causes the latter to reside anterior to the aforementioned lungs and the vertebral tract including T5-T8, behind the sternum (which protects it) and the costal cartilages of the III, IV and V pair of ribs, and above the diaphragm .
The heart is in a strategic position to be able to best fulfill its function as a blood pump.
