Sinusitis is an acute or chronic inflammatory process of the nasal cavities. We speak precisely of rhinosinusitis when the inflammation also involves the nasal mucous membranes.
Sinusitis is usually triggered by bacterial or viral insults, but allergies can also be the cause. Symptoms that distinguish sinusitis are: nasal congestion (stuffy nose), bad breath, dyspnoea, fever, swollen eyes, runny nose and cough.

- Nasal decongestants (to be used for a short time): pseudoephedrine (eg Actifed, Actigrip), Oximetazoline hydrochloride
- Corticosteroids spray: fluticasone (eg avamys), triamcinolone (eg kenakort, Triamvirgi), beclomethasone (eg Rinoclenil)
- Corticosteroids to be taken orally or intravenously: methylprednisolone (eg. Depo-medrol, MEDROL, urbason), Prednisone (eg. Deltacortene)
- Antitussives: in case the sinusitis was also accompanied by cough. The most used drug for this purpose is dextromethorphan (eg. Aricodiltosse)
- Antihistamines: desloratadine (eg neoclarityn, azomyr, aerius), Azelastine (eg Lasticom, Allespray), Hydroxyzine (eg Atarax). Indicated to reduce sinus symptoms in the context of allergies
