The best known and most used vegetable source in the presence of menstrual pain is given by the flowering tops of Achillea millefolium. It is used against dysmenorrhea (painful menstruation) mainly for its antispasmodic properties.
Among the other plants exploited for their antispasmodic properties, we remember chamomile, mugwort (also endowed with emmenagogic properties), shepherd's purse, piscidia, calendula, lemon balm and argentina.
It should be noted, however, that the effect of herbal teas is rather mild and in the presence of significant menstrual pains they may not be useful.
Generally speaking, a diet richer in fish is often recommended (at least 3 weekly intakes) and limiting the consumption of simple sugars and foods that are too high in fat.
