What's this ?
The female condom (Femidom ®) is a mechanical (or barrier) method of contraception which, when worn by the woman, allows the sperm to be collected inside a waterproof sheath inserted into the vagina and connected to two flexible rings placed at its ends. way, the female condom offers double protection:
- It protects against unwanted pregnancies because direct contact between sperm and egg cell is denied;
- Limits the transmission of venereal diseases such as gonorrhea, chlamydia, candidiasis, AIDS, condyloma acuminata, herpetic infections, etc.
Curiosity
Obtained the authorization of the Food And Drugs Administration, the female condom has been marketed in Europe since 1993. However, in our country this barrier method of contraception is quite innovative, as it has only recently entered the market.
Female condom on Amazon
Buy on AmazonThis soft and ultra-sensitive female condom is made with an innovative material, latex-free nitrile, it is lubricated but spermicide-free.
The product is suitable for use with any lubricant based on water, silicone or oil, and is also suitable for those suffering from latex allergy.
With a width of 50 mm and a length of 180 mm, these condoms are made to be compatible with the female anatomy: they adhere perfectly to the vaginal wall ensuring maximum protection.
The product has the CE mark.
This female condom is made with the "exclusive" AirBubble "(air bubble), without plastic ring or sponges, so as to give greater handling and comfort. The air bubble is imperceptible, because it is made of the same sensitive material with which the rest of the condom is made (AT-10), a material based on synthetic resin. Due to the properties of the material and the high production technology, these condoms are much stronger than other condoms, but also incredibly thin (20 microns).
These condoms are hypoallergenic and latex free. If additional lubrication is required, all water, oil and silicone based lubricants, silicone oil, massage oils and petroleum jelly can be used.
The box contains 3 condoms.
Composition of female condom
Mistakenly confused with the contraceptive diaphragm, the female condom consists of two flexible rings, connected by a soft membrane, synthetic or natural, about 17 cm long. The length of the female condom is comparable to that of the classic open condom (worn by the man). Unlike the latter, the female condom has a wider base, so as to allow the penis to enter the vagina. .
The female condom is therefore composed of:
- An INTERNAL RING (hermetically closed), which must be pushed deeply (but gently) into the vagina. The presence of the inner ring allows the sheath to be placed in the right position, behind the pubic bone.
- An EXTERNAL RING (base), which protrudes from the vagina partially covering the external genitalia. This ring, left open, allows the introduction of the erect penis into the vagina.
- A WATERPROOF SHEATH connects the two rings. The membrane acts as a collector for the sperm. The first female condoms were made of polyurethane; subsequently, those in synthetic nitrile and natural latex were also produced.
How to use
During the first applications, the woman may experience difficulty in correctly positioning the female condom. For this purpose, before using the condom in sexual intercourse, some attempts are necessary, until the insertion becomes immediate and simple.

Below, the general instructions for a correct application of the female condom are summarized by points:
- Wash your hands thoroughly
- Open the package containing the barrier contraceptive with your hands. Avoid using scissors or razor blades
- Find a comfortable position for inserting the female condom. The most suitable posture is purely subjective: standing with bent knees, sitting on the toilet or lying on the floor
- Before inserting the condom, hold the sheath by the closed end, while squeezing the inner ring between thumb and forefinger
- With one hand, open the labia to facilitate insertion
- Push the condom gently (but deeply) into the vagina, inserting the index finger inside it. At this stage, the woman will feel the "(inner) ring" rise along the vaginal canal. Make sure the sheath is not twisted.
- The inner ring will naturally position itself behind the pubic bone
- The external ring must remain outside the external genitalia, to allow the man to introduce the penis in erection
- To remove the female condom, press the outer ring and gently pull it outwards. During this maneuver, the woman can facilitate the expulsion by pushing with the pelvic muscles, as if to defecate.
- Similar to tampons, the female condom should NOT be thrown into the toilet. Instead, the woman can put the used condom in the trash.
Please Note
- Do not use the female condom together with the male condom
- Do not use the same female condom more than once
- Do not use the female condom if there is an obvious tear, break or after expiration
Pain in application
If inserted correctly, the application of the female condom is absolutely not painful. During the first applications, the woman may feel a slight discomfort or a certain difficulty in introducing the condom. The sensation is almost normal, an expression of the "inexperience on the use of the" method. After a few applications, the insertion of the female condom will be simple and immediate.
Protection from unwanted pregnancy
Given that no contraceptive method - be it mechanical, hormonal, implantable or natural - guarantees total coverage from unwanted pregnancies and sexually transmitted diseases, the female condom offers valid protection, comparable to that offered by the male condom.
Only total sexual abstinence guarantees 100% protection from unwanted pregnancy and venereal diseases.
Despite this, some sources point out that the failure rate of the female contraceptive is significantly higher than the male condom. Furthermore, it appears that the odds of contraceptive practice failing are heavily influenced by the correct application of the female condom.
