E460 CELLULOSE
E460 (i): Microcrystalline cellulose
E460 (ii): cellulose powder
Cellulose is one of the main polysaccharides making up wood and all plant structures in general.
It consists of a large number of glucose molecules, joined together to form an unbranched polymer chain.
It is mainly used in food as a thickening, anti-aggregating and emulsifying agent, but also in other products such as glazes, lacquers, gums, to treat certain types of fabrics and as a wood filler.
It can be contained in several products.
High concentrations of cellulose, being insoluble, can cause intestinal problems, such as bloating, constipation and diarrhea. For these reasons it cannot be used in weaning foods for infants.
