E450a DIPHOSPHATES, DISODIUM DIPHOSPHATE, PYROPHOSPHATES
E450 (I): Disodium diphosphate
E450 (II): Tri-sodium diphosphate
E450 (III): Tetra-sodium pyro-phosphate can also prevent discoloration caused by metals
E450 (V): Tetra-potassium pyro-phosphate
E450 (VI): Calcium hydrogen di-phosphate can also be used as a bread improver and calcium supplement
E450 additives are a group of compounds formed by the union of sodium, potassium and calcium salts together with phosphates.
They are all obtained synthetically.
They are mainly emulsifiers, stabilizers and acidity correctors.
These additives can be found in various products such as processed cheeses, canned meats, cooked sausages, cooked hams, prepared turkey meats, breaded and confectionery products, concentrated milk, powdered milk, potato flour, pudding preparations.
Diphosphates and pyrophosphates are to be consumed in moderation, because in large doses they can involve risks of hyperactivity, poor assimilation of minerals and even digestive problems.
At the moment, at the doses normally present in food, there are no negative side effects on human health. High concentrations of phosphates, on the other hand, could alter various metabolic processes.
ADI dose: 70 mg per kg of body weight.
