E432 POLYSORBATE 20 or MONOLURATE of POLYOXYETHYLENE 20 SORBITAN
Polysorbate 20 is a natural compound produced from ethylene oxide, sorbitol (see E420) and lauric acid.
It mainly has an emulsifying, stabilizing and synthetic support function.
It is a compound that is often used in ice creams, packaged sorbets, cake decorations, certain spreads, soups, sweets, chewing gum, soft drinks, etc.
At the doses normally used, there are no negative side effects, but it is believed that polysorbate 20 can cause skin reactions, digestive disorders, bladder and kidney stones, weight gain, urinary infections, poor iron assimilation at high doses. . It is also thought that it may contain residues that are harmful to health, such as iron oxide, dioxane and ethylene glycol.
Importantly, people intolerant to propylene glycol should avoid the additive group E430 to E436.
However, studies are continuing to be carried out on this additive to determine its actual toxicity.
