E262 SODIUM DIACETATE or SODIUM ACETATE
Sodium acetate is the sodium salt of acetic acid. It is an acidifying compound that can be of natural or chemical origin. There are 2 subgroups:
- E262 (i) sodium acetate
- E262 (ii) sodium diacetate (a mixture of sodium acetate and acetic acid).
Acetates are used as preservatives and buffers.
They are contained in many food products.
They do not appear to have negative side effects, as they are normal components of the body's cells.
They should only be avoided by those with "intolerance to" vinegar (which is very rare).
Not recommended for use by pregnant women and infants.
ADI DOSE: 15 mg per kg of body weight.
