Dimethyl bicarbonate is a synthetically produced preservative, frequently used in aromatic alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, teas and canned herbal teas. When it decomposes, it releases large amounts of methanol.
There are conflicting theories about its toxicity: some think it is very dangerous, therefore to be avoided, others instead support the opposite thesis. Therefore, as a precaution, it is advisable not to make excessive and frequent use.
