Cochineal red A is a synthetically obtained azo dye; its color is similar to that obtained from cochineals. Cochineal red A is commonly found in candies, syrups, ketchup sauces, canned salmon, fizzy drinks, candied cherries, popsicles, marzipan and jellies.
Risks: hyperactivity, asthma, hives, insomnia; there are reports of cancer found in some animals.
Less harmful than the natural compound for the health of consumers, cochineal red a is however contraindicated especially for those allergic to aspirin and for asthmatics, as well as for children. Its use is not recommended, in general, because it could be carcinogenic. .
ADI DOSE: 4mg per kg of body weight.
