Tartrazine is a synthetic compound, a sulfur-containing sodium salt, which occurs in yellow granules and crystals. We find it in desserts, drinks, vegetable preserves (excluding tomatoes), zabaglione ice cream and syrups.
Not all studies agree in defining the possible negative effects on the health of humans and pets (since it can also be found in the food of dogs and cats). It can cause: hyperactivity, asthma, hives, rhinitis, visual disturbances and insomnia, it could also be carcinogenic with mutagenic effects. The use of tartrazine is prohibited in Austria, Finland and Norway. It is believed that it can cause problems for asthmatics or people allergic to acetylsalicylic acid (aspirin). It is also hypothesized that it can cause disorders in the learning ability of children.
