Lateral raises with dumbbell while lying down: Execution
The starting position sees the athlete lying on his side with the arm to be trained along the body but not leaning against it. The elbow is slightly flexed and the wrist straight. The exercise is unilateral and as such, only one hand holds the handlebar. The execution consists in abducting / flexing the shoulder until the arm is almost perpendicular to the ground. Flexing the elbow is considered cheating and shifts the workload to the anterior portion of the shoulder. The torso twist is also considered cheating. The lying position tends to favor the work of the muscles involved in the first half of the shoulder flexion, including the supraspinatus which works concentrically only in the first degrees of the movement, after which it becomes stabilizer.
