In most cases, the causative agents are paramyxoviruses (those of the real flu are, instead, orthomyxoviruses). Parainfluenza syndromes can also be caused, however, by other viruses, such as adenoviruses or enteroviruses.

Parainfluenza virus infections affecting the upper airways cause mild flu-like symptoms, such as sore throat, dry cough, runny nose (runny nose), chills, fever, and general malaise. When parainfluenza syndromes affect the gastrointestinal tract, however, the initial manifestations generally include pharyngitis, low-grade fever, vomiting, diarrhea and abdominal pain.
