The cause of mononucleosis is, in fact, the Epstein Barr virus (EBV), belonging to the herpes virus family.
The prevailing symptoms of mononucleosis are: asthenia (a sense of exhaustion), high fever, swollen lymph nodes (especially those of the neck) and pharyngitis which, within a week, becomes very intense. After the clinical presentation of mononucleosis, in most cases, it is cured without too many complications: in adolescents and adults the manifestations tend to disappear within a few weeks. The only disorder that tends to persist, even for several months. from the infection, it is a feeling of generalized tiredness, while the most fearful complication is the rupture of the enlarged spleen.

Like its "relatives", once the infection is contracted, the EBV virus remains forever latent in the human body and can reappear periodically.
