Depending on the underlying cause, a split tongue can be associated with other symptoms, including pain, bad breath, taste changes, tingling, and burning.
In some cases, cuts on the tongue tend to resolve spontaneously within a few days, but some remedies can be used to speed up and promote healing. Other times, however, therapeutic interventions aimed at resolving the underlying pathology are necessary. In general, good oral hygiene helps prevent complications associated with a split tongue.
.Other terms used to indicate the split tongue are:
- Fissured tongue;
- Plicate tongue.
It should be noted that fissured tongue does not always result from pathological causes. The cuts on the tongue can depend, for example, on a genetic predisposition; at other times, it is the normal aging process that makes the grooves naturally present on the tongue more pronounced.
