Generality
Hypokalaemia (or hypokalaemia) is the reduction in the concentration of potassium in the blood.
This condition recognizes various causes, but generally depends on a deficiency in the body's reserves of potassium or an abnormal movement of the same within the intracellular compartment.
Hypokalaemia can be at the origin of arrhythmias, muscle weakness, hypotension, confusion, alkalosis (imbalance in the pH of the blood, due to an excess of alkaline substances) and shallow breathing.
