Generality
PAP - acronym for Prostate Acid Phosphatase, Italianized in Prostatic Acid Phosphatase - is an indicator of prostatic neoplasms detectable in the blood. Recently, however, this tumor marker has been linked to a marginal role by the much better known PSA (Prostate Specific Antigen), which represents the reference marker for prostate neoplasms, thanks to its improved sensitivity and diagnostic specificity.
What's this
Prostatic acid phosphatase (PAP) is a glycoprotein belonging to the group of acid phosphatases.
It is synthesized by the prostate glandular cells under the stimulus of testosterone and carries out its action in the seminal fluid.
