Beginning about mid-calf, the Achilles tendon is a very strong and durable structure, measuring 5-6 millimeters in thickness and approximately 15 centimeters in length.
The Achilles tendon plays a fundamental role in the mechanics of human locomotion; connecting the gastrocnemius and soleus to the calcaneus, in fact, allows these muscles to perform plantarflexion movements of the foot and flexion of the leg towards the thigh.
The Achilles tendon is at the center of several pathological conditions, including: tendonitis (inflammation of the Achilles tendon), ruptures (lacerations of the Achilles tendon) and tendon xanthomas (accumulations of cholesterol and macrophages on the surface of the "Achilles tendon" Achilles).
